2019 was a year in which climate change was put squarely on the national and international agenda. Global temperature rises by the end of the decade are currently predicted to be much higher than those anticipated in the Paris Agreement. These would, in turn, lead to sea level rises which could be devastating for coastal and low-lying economies.
2019 was also the year in which the UK government took a leadership role in the climate debate by becoming the first national government to declare a climate emergency. Shortly after we saw the UK become the first major economy to pass a net zero emissions law. 2019 also saw the rise of Extinction Rebellion on the UK stage and of Greta Thunberg on the international stage.
The currently debated Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill will place yet more targets on government and business, not only on their direct UK emissions but also on their global supply chains.
There is a growing social and environmental awareness amongst the general public, particularly in the younger generations. Societal groups are now starting to make conscious decisions about who to spend their money with or work for based on the environmental impact of their chosen companies.
The need for business to play their part in the national drive to a net zero economy by 2050 is now a stark reality and the imperative of all business leaders.
Businesses must play leadership roles in driving real and meaningful change, those failing to do so will face scrutiny from government, customers and employees alike. But in the wake of a Covid-19 recovery, where businesses have tough commercial objectives and priorities and likely, a smaller workforce to achieve these, experienced and competent external support will be required to carry on their sustainability agendas.
